A nonprofit can apply, and a Maryland-based fiscal sponsor can apply on behalf of a Maryland-based group, project, or artist under a qualifying Model A fiscal sponsorship arrangement.

There is a catch: the application must have a lead artist and a fully designed artwork proposal.

Individual artists can apply too, provided the event is free, open to the public, and held in Baltimore City.

15. National Endowment for the Arts — Grants for Arts Projects

Yes, I'm including the NEA, with a warning label.

The NEA specifically welcomes applications from organizations of different sizes and from first-time applicants. Its Grants for Arts Projects program supports many disciplines, including arts education, dance, design, folk and traditional arts, literary arts, museums, music, theatre, visual and media arts, and more. But this is not a beginner grant.

Applicants must have completed at least five years of arts programming and had at least $20,000 in operating expenses in their most recently completed fiscal year. A 1:1 cost share is also required. (NEA)

So a tiny arts organization that launched six months ago should probably spend its grant-writing hours elsewhere. The NEA does, however, have Challenge America within the current GAP structure, providing $10,000 grants for arts projects from small organizations with less than $250,000 in prior-year operating expenses that extend the reach of the arts to underserved groups or communities.
